Opus Energy surveyed 250 SME owners, examining the energy they put into their businesses, and the way they run them; from the day-to-day tasks, to management of staff, to pitching for new clients. With the summer Olympics on the horizon, Opus Energy has seen a parallel with the way SME owners run their businesses and the way athletes train for their sport.

Both disciplines face key challenges in setting goals, staying ahead of the competition, and recovering from setbacks. The survey indicated that bosses fell into one of the following categories:

Owning and running a small business can be all consuming; 62 per cent of SME owners say they check their emails constantly throughout the day, whilst almost half of all respondents (47 per cent) have worked through a weekend, due to work commitments. What’s more, 74 per cent say that their relationships with their partner, friends or family have been affected by working long hours.

Our study found that most SME owners are ‘weightlifters’: they like to get involved in every aspect of their business.

When thinking about what success looked like, half of SME owners stated that the reputation of the company, and their own success as an owner, were the most important things to them. This ‘weightlifter’ attitude is evidenced in the fact that they barely take a break, with only 15 per cent saying they pace themselves by going for a walk during the day. This new research further found that the large majority of British business owners do not like to delegate tasks to their staff.

Running a business is not for the fainthearted. It requires dedication, commitment and an endless supply of energy to make sure you’re keeping your company off the ground and ahead of the curve.
